1Malaysia is not new. It brings about the idea that Tanah Melayu>Malaya>Malaysia belongs to its rightful citizens and thus all citizen, regardless of creed and race, should be treated as equal. This
proclamation has comes in many names at different stages of our nation young history.
The patron saint of 1Malaysia is none other than
Dato'
Onn Jaafar. As Malaya geared itself to fight for independence,
Dato'
Onn dropped a bomb shell upon UMNO, the party he founded, with the idea of opening it up for non Malays. He didn't see the nation going anywhere without taking down the race barrier. Needless to say that his
colleagues didn't find this too amusing and he was booted out of the party here after. The malays at that time see other races as threat and see UMNO as a one race party through and through. Dato' Onn thinking was too advance, maybe around 100 years too advance.
The idea again resurfaced in the early 60's under the moniker of Malaysian Malaysia. The DAP, a splinter party founded after Malaysia-Singapore split, use it as its key objectives , offering equal access and opportunity to all Malaysian. The idea was seen as a threat to the malays (by now known as bumiputra - son of the soils) interests, which is percieved as a birth right for every malays in Malaysia.
And in 2008, then deputy prime minister launches his 1Malaysia website with similar ideas. However it wasn't until he came to power in early2009 that the 1Malaysia concept really took off. It evangalist on the 8 values of 1Malaysia concepts from a non political perspective. It is more on the lines of Rukun Negara. Read it here if you are interested

Equal opportunity for all in all area of concerns.
That it would not be be just another flash in the pan - half baked ideas.
Equality not only in opportunity but also assistance to the needy.
I hope that it will be carry out in the same spirit that Dato' Onn had in mind but from a non political views. To the extent of it being the new Rukun Negara. Let's hope that 1Malaysia will bring changes to bills and acts. Special treatment to selected few has breed complacency. Let's stop the rot.
