Election is here again. While the politics will takes center stage, the other side shows tend to excite me more. The poster, flag, banner war is a sight to behold. Millions of ringgit is thrown into it. For some political parties, this is the only means of campaign with radios and televisions are out of reach.
Having the experience working with SPR as a temp during year 2000 election, I am more than capable of articulating and dissecting this very symbol of democracy.
Let’s start at the very bottom of the party machinery, the party cadres. They are the loudest lot and the most hardworking at every party campaign makeshift HQ. They are the one that will put in long hours and in some parties, make a quick ringgit or two. Cadres usually will work their buns off once given a free party t-shirt. Cadres will take time off from work and will leave family and friend, especially from an opposing party, for two weeks. Cadres love the attention and thrive on having surprise visit from party big wig especially at 2am when they are preparing another poster onslaught.
